USD 298 BOE hears ideas on track

USD 298 Board of Education met November 9, 2020 for their regular monthly meeting. Following routine business, Superintendent Scott Crenshaw kicked off the meeting by recognizing Mrs. Shari Pittenger as the Kansas Association of Heath, Physical Education and Dance (KAHPERD) teacher of the year. Pittenger has taught physical education to grades K-12 for more than 30 years in USD 298.

Track

John Baetz addressed the board in regard to the condition of the track at Mettner Field. He walked the track with Crenshaw and a personal acquaintance with experience in such matters, finding the track to be in worse condition than originally thought. Even patching the track could put athletes at risk of injury due to uneven surfaces.

Baetz asked the board’s permission to put together a committee of community members interested in replacing the track, thereby preserving the sport in USD 298 schools. The committee would study the condition of the track and gather information as to replacement cost. Ultimately, the committee would raise the loosely estimated $300,000 it would take to reconstruct. The committee will also look at enlarging the track to be suitable for league meets.
