For the past two decades, the Kansas Department of Commerce has recognized June as “Business Appreciation Month” or BAM, as it was known. June was selected as the month in which we businesses across the state were recognized for the vitally important contributions they make to the well-being of our communities. This includes jobs, added amenities, community involvement, sponsorship of various activities, economic impact and so much more.

What used to be called Home Economics, what a class at one time open only to female students. Typically, a semester of the year was spent on learning to cook, and the other semester focused on learning to sew. Through the years opinions about boys in the kitchen changed when parents and educators realized social norms had changed. Boys, too, needed to be able to feed themselves or stitch up a hole in their jeans. It was still mostly sewing and cooking, but the classes were unisex.

No one can disagree that when Superintendent Scott Crenshaw walked into USD298 he walked into a mess. Did we have great teachers who genuinely care about their students? Absolutely! Did we have students who, for the most part, cared about their education and enjoyed school? Absolutely! Were we proud of our community’s youngest citizens? Absolutely!

The biggest asset of every non-profit organization is their volunteers. In general, volunteers are like a factory’s workforce. They take on tasks of every kind. They provide services that otherwise may not exist for the organization. Janitorial services might be needed, or handyman services, painting, etc. Volunteers may take on responsibilities with the grounds. They provide educational services, transportation and help with programs. They may provide office duties such as filing, researching, etc.
