A memorial service for Dr. Gary Deane Courtney, DDS, former dentist from Lansing, Kan., was held on Aug. 12, 2019 at June’s Northland in Leavenworth, Kan. He passed away Aug. 4 at his home in Ponca City, Okla., after an almost three-year battle with Merkel Cell Carcinoma.

Dr. Courtney was born on July 27, 1969, to Larry and Carol (Wiebke) Courtney in Lawrence, Kan. He was raised in Bonner Springs, Kan. and was a 1987 graduate of Bonner Springs High School. He graduated from Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan. in 1991 with a degree in Biology. In 1996 he received his Doctorate in Dental Surgery from University of Missouri in Kansas City (UMKC). Dr. Courtney owned his own dental practice in Lansing, Kan. for 16 years. He sold the practice upon receiving his cancer diagnosis in November 2016.

Dr. Courtney and wife, Nancy, then relocated to Ponca City, Okla., where he worked for Affordable Dentistry until medically retiring in 2018.

Gary is survived by his wife Nancy; his parents Larry and Carol (Basehor, Kan.); son Bryan Courtney (Leavenworth, Kan.); daughter Bethanie Courtney (Pittsburg, Kan.); stepdaughter and stepson Madison and Jake Bosworth (Winfield, Kan.); sister Kelli Shelton (Bloomingdale, Ill.); brother Keven (Trisha) Courtney (Bonner Springs).

Also surviving are his grandmothers Goldie Wiebke (Lincoln, Kan.) and Beatrice Courtney (Bonner Springs).

Preceding him in death were his grandfathers Bill Wiebke and James Courtney.

The family is requesting that any memorials be directed to Merkel Cell Carcinoma Research or to Hospice of North Central Oklahoma.
