Leo Duane Vonada
Leo Duane Vonada, 87, died Saturday, February 8, 2020 at Hays Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was born on the same farm in which he lived his entire life in the Rosette Community north of Sylvan Grove on January 22, 1933 to Alfred and Helen (Peck) Vonada. Duane was a 1950 graduate of Sylvan High School. On April 6, 1953 he enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served on the Battleship Wisconsin BB 64 until November 16, 1954. On January 20, 1957, he united in marriage to Donna Lee Brant. Duane and Donna spent the rest of their 63 years of marriage on the family farm.
Duane was very active is his community. He served on the Sylvan Grove school board, Sylvan Rural Fire Department, EMT, Spillman Creek Watershed Board, Sylvan Historical Society, Lincoln County Preservation Board, founder of the Post Rock Opportunities Foundation that built the Kansas Originals Market, American Legion, elder of First Presbyterian Church, Sylvan Lions Club and Sylvan Grove Saddle Club. Some other activities are Masonic Lodge rising to Worshipful Master, Eastern Star as Worthy Patron and founding member of the Sylvan Grove Historical Society. He was an instrument rated private pilot. He was founder of the Vonada Stone Company and Vonada Farms, Inc.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Delmar and Lowell Vonada.
Survivors include wife Donna Vonada, Sylvan Grove; son Damon Vonada and wife, Janet of Sylvan Grove; and daughter Denette Vonada-Smith and husband Drew Vonada-Smith of Tonganoxie; five grandchildren - Lacey Keller, Derek Vonada, Jenna Kratky, Lee Keller and Levi Keller; three great-grandchildren Joseph Kratky, Jacob Kratky, and Avery Vonada. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at the Methodist Church, Lucas. Burial will be at 1:30 Rosette Cemetery, Sylvan Grove. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Post Rock Community Foundation or to donor’s choice.
