The older I get and the more life I live (which are not the same) the more credence I put to the old adages my mother used to throw in my direction.
Whenever I was embroiled in childhood dramas, she would would offer her advice, avoiding saying things like “you should…” or “you need to...” or “go tell them...” She knew I would play deaf if she tried to tell me, unequivocally, how to handle a certain situation. She chose to say things like, “I think if that happened to me I might…” or “have you tried…” and similar lead-ins to her sage advice. Even with words, the packaging counts.
