Lorene Martha Buttenhoff

Lorene Martha Buttenhoff, 97, passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2023 in Lincoln, KS. She was born in Lincoln County, KS to Theodore Obermueller and Frieda Von Fange Obermueller on December 13, 1925. Frieda passed away at the age of 34 in 1928. Several years later Theodore married Alma Bolte “Mom” to Lorene and her siblings. Lorene and her seven brothers grew up on a farm seven miles southeast of Lincoln. She attended elementary school at St. Paul’s Lutheran School just a mile and a half from her home. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1945.

On July 28, 1946 Lorene married Harold Buttenhoff of Lincoln at St.

Paul’s Lutheran Church, Lincoln. After their wedding, they moved to their farm three miles south of Lincoln, where they lived and farmed together for almost 62 years. Lorene and Harold were married for 63 years, until the Lord called Harold home in October of 2009.

In addition to being a full-time homemaker and partner in the farming operation, Lorene was a member of several organizations in the Lincoln community. One of her many contributions included co-chairing Lincoln’s Bicentennial Festival, a weekend-long celebration in 1976.

Faithful servants of the Lord, Lorene and Harold shared their faith by example and were active members of St. John Lutheran Church of Lincoln, where both served in leadership roles. Lorene served many years as an officer of St. John Lutheran Elementary School PTA, belonged to the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and taught Sunday School. Once her children were grown, she worked at Anderson’s Department Store in Lincoln for many years before working for the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services as a supervisor for the SRS Homemaker Program, retiring in 1991.

In her retirement, Lorene enjoyed traveling with Harold to visit family and friends. Lorene also found time to continue her sewing and quilting, making treasured gifts for her children and grandchildren.

Left to celebrate Lorene’s life are daughters, Carol and Joe de la Torre of Alexandria, VA, Gwenda Buttenhoff of Lincoln, and Cindy Darland and Billy Don Grant of Naples, FL; her grandchildren, Ashleigh and A.J. Muldoon of Washington, D.C., Lindsey de la Torre of Washington, D.C., Michael Darland of Lincoln, and Jason Darland of Kansas City, KS; sisters-in-law, Dolores Obermueller and Sidona Obermueller; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.

Visitation: 1-7 p.m., Thursday, May 18, 2023 at Parsons Funeral Home – Hall Chapel, Lincoln with family present 5:30-7 p.m.

Funeral service: 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 19, 2023 at St. John Lutheran Church, Lincoln with burial following at the church cemetery.
