Commission grappling with loss of Highway Dept. employees

At least five Lincoln County Highway Department employees have turned in resignations or quit in recent weeks, including the Director of Public Works Michel O’Hare, the Interim Road and Bridge Supervisor Jesse Zachgo (who was the Bridge Foreman prior to filling the Interim Road and Bridge Supervisor position), and Office Manager Sherie Lee, which leaves the Highway Department with no supervisory leadership. A mechanic position and truck driver position have also been vacated.

County Clerk Dawn Harlow said during a special meeting of the Board of County Commissioners on Thursday Aug. 8, that a fully staffed Highway Department is 27 employees, and following resignations and previously unfilled positions, there are now 20 employees.

The sudden exodus of a large amount of employees in the last month follows the June 28 decision by the Board of County Commissioners to begin advertising for a new Director of the Highway Department, while O’Hare was still leading the Public Works department.
