Mary E. Nelson
Mary Ellen Nelson, 91, formerly of Salina, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 8, 2019. She was born Sept. 8, 1927, to Everett and Velma Hartzell at Lincoln County Hospital, Lincoln, Kan.
She was a graduate of Brookville High School and attended Kansas Wesleyan University, Salina. Mrs. Nelson taught in country schools in Lincoln and Saline counties, and was later a bookkeeper for Evans Grain Company.
Not only a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother (her great grandchildren lovingly called her ”GG”), she was also an extraordinary friend, companion and mentor to all. Former students continued to contact throughout her life. Her love for her family, her home and hosting unforgettable holiday celebrations were the heart and soul of her life. Mrs. Nelson was a member of the Salina Sunrise Presbyterian Church and an associate member of the Presbyterian Women of the Church.
Survivors include her sister, Dr. Beverlee Kissick (Don) of Flagstaff, Ariz.; daughter, Dane Rae Hale (Chuck) and son Douglas (Cappi) both of Topeka; daughter-in-law Linda Nelson of Salina; grandchildren Amy Friedel, Polly Peters (Aric), Jennifer Stuart (Luke), Carrie Nelson, Ryan Nelson (Leslie) and Andrew Nelson; great grandchildren Lexi and Devin Wegner, Grant and Luke Peters, Nathan Friedel and Graham Nelson. Preceded in death by: her parents, Everett and Velma Hartzell; sister, Jo Ann House; son, Royce Nelson; and her husband of 70 years, Richard Nelson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 12, at Salina Sunrise Presbyterian Church, 825 East Beloit, Salina, with interment in Prairie Mound Cemetery, Ellsworth County. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Sunrise Presbyterian Church, in care of Ryan Mortuary, Salina.
