Vath and Barrientes fight through backside at 3-2-1A State wrestling
Last Friday and Saturday, Lincoln and Sylvan-Lucas wrestlers, Chantz Vath (145) and Tra Barrientes (220), attended the 3-2-1A state meet in Hays. Prior to state, Vath placed first at regionals and Barrientes placed fourth, being the only two on the wrestling squad to qualify.
On Friday, Vath had a good start to the state meet with a pin over Tristan Rathbone of Hillsboro. Vath continued to quarterfinals where he was defeated by decision (7-1) by Brandon Rohr from Plainville. After being moved to the consolation bracket, Vath was able to pin opponent Jeb Nowak from Garden Plains on Saturday and continue on the backside of the bracket. In the next match, Luke Horn from Wathena-Riverside ended Vath’s season by decision (8-1), eliminating Vath from the tournament. After a tough year battling injuries, Vath was still able to end the season 35-5 and score seven points during the state meet.
Tra Barrientes qualified for state in weight class 220. On Friday, Barrientes started the state meet with a loss by pin to Charlie Nordquist from Marion. Barrientes continued in the consolation bracket on Saturday where he pinned Preston Gilbert of Council Grove in the first round. Unfortunately, Creighton Johnson of Beloit went on to pin Barrientes in the next match, eliminating him from the tournament. Johnson placed third in the state meet overall.
