One of the many events that were canceled or delayed due to the pandemic was a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of Lincoln County. It’s no longer a significant anniversary, but that didn’t keep the Lincoln County Historical Society from planning a celebration of the founders of our county. Mark your you calendar for Saturday, October 8.
Frankie’s closed a short time recently to move to the Hungry Hunter’s S. 5th Street location. The move would have left the restaurant on W. Lincoln Ave. empty, like it has been several times in the past.
In May, the Finch Theatre in Lincoln was awarded a $10,000 grant, over and above the donations received from the annual membership drive to install a new sound system.
While brainstorming ideas to raise funds for the Vesper Community Center a few years ago, Mona Gerstmann suggested a Farmer’s Market. Vesper was the most suitable location for several reasons. The market was created to raise funds for the Center. Vesper is close to both Lincoln and Sylvan Grove, making it a convenient location for county residents. Finally, there is ample room for multiple vendors and parking, and provides a single location for locals to sell their goods. The Market opened in June and will continue through September 29th, depending on vendors. It will then resume next June.

Many communities/school districts have a hard time convincing parents to volunteer to help their children’s schools with things like sports, school dances and the like. Maybe they think the district should be able to take care of their own needs. Maybe they think some of the projects are not necessary for a good education. Maybe they don’t realize if they don’t have the finances to help, they have their time which is just as important. Through the years Booster Clubs were formed. Traditionally these clubs were an adult version of a pep club. Typically, the members were parents of athletes, cheerleaders or pep band members. Many alumni joined the Booster Club to show their support. The Booster Club made sure there was water and Gatorade for the athletes. They brought the snacks. They made sure the uniforms were in decent shape, and if not, embarked on a fundraising project to replace them. Booster Clubs were a much-needed addition to the academic environment.
